Updated Look At The Highest Paid Head Coaches In The NFL

Publish date: 2024-05-21

As of Wednesday evening, the Cleveland Browns are the only team remaining with a head coaching vacancy, following the Carolina Panthers and New York Giants hirings of Matt Rhule and Joe Judge, respectively.

The Panthers handed former Baylor head coach Matt Rhule a whopping $60 million contract (incentives can increase it to $70 million) over seven years. And with that, the soon-to-be rookie head coach is already among the NFL's highest paid at the position.

Only five NFL head coaches currently place higher than Rhule, according to Forbes and ESPN (h/t Bloomberg.com). Not bad for a man who has yet to coach a single game at the professional level.

Unsurprisingly, Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots tops Forbes' list at $12 million. Given his status as perhaps the greatest head coach of all-time -- he's led the Pats to six Super Bowls -- Belichick certainly deserves to be paid the most.

Pete Carroll of the Seattle Seahawks ranks second among the highest paid coaches at $11 million. The Seahawks have made the playoffs in seven of the past eight years under Carroll, and he guided them to a Super Bowl XLVIII Championship.

Jon Gruden, who just completed the second season of a 10-year deal worth $100 million, ranks third among annual pay for NFL head coaches. Gruden's Oakland Raiders are preparing for relocation to Las Vegas this year.

Sean Payton of the New Orleans Saints appears fourth on the list, with an average contract value of $9.75 million. Payton just guided the Saints to their third straight NFC South division title, though they were eliminated by the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card Round.

Rounding out the top five is John Harbaugh ($ million) of the Baltimore Ravens, who signed a nine-year extension with the team last year. Harbaugh guided the Ravens to a Super Bowl championship seven years ago, and the team secured the top record in the NFL this year (14-2) with MVP favorite Lamar Jackson.
