She’s enjoyed a career spanning nearly three decades now, getting her start in the teen MTV drama My So-Called Life, at just 13 years old. Claire Danes has been the subject of tabloid drama, taken on roles that shine a light on autism and bipolar disorder and is an award winner for both television and film over the years.

Danes experienced a tumultuous dating life early in her career. She dated Ben Lee for six years and then actor Billy Crudup for three. The relationship between Danes and Crudup was filled with drama as the latter left Mary-Louise Parker for her.

In 2006, Danes met actor Hugh Dancy (Hannibal) on the set of Evening and the two were married three years later in France. The couple’s son Cyrus was born in 2012 and Rowan was born in 2018.

Danes took a short break from acting to attend Yale, studying art, psychology and political science and although she never completed her studies her desire to manage her career, left Danes making choices that some questioned.

For example, according to The List, the actress turned down the role of Rose in the Titanic, simply because she had previously starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and felt it would be redundant. In fact, she was so selective with her roles, she held out for what she deemed meaningful and didn’t work for two years until she came across the character in Homeland.

The Essex Serpent, stars Danes and Tom Hiddleston in the Apple TV + series due to drop in May. Based on Sarah Perry’s bestselling novel of the same name, the six-episode series is part romance, part fantasy and follows Danes and Hiddleston on a journey to find a legendary beast in the countryside. The two may become tangled in a relationship along the way according to Perry’s account.
